A trend in eco-kitchen remodeling is away from solid wood panel kitchen cabinet doors, and toward kitchen cabinet curtains. Its a conservation tradition our great-grandmothers often used in their kitchen decor. Easily create a fresh new look in your own kitchen!
Eco Friendly Kitchen Remodeling Overview:
Ok, you have decided you definitely need to remodel your kitchen, and you want to use eco-kitchen design techniques. Here are some criteria to help decide how to proceed:
REFURBISH IF POSSIBLE: The most eco-friendly way to update your kitchen is to REFINISH & REUSE the existing WOOD CABINETS. First remove all doors and drawers. Choose which doors (if any) will be replaced with cabinet curtains. Sand frames, drawer fronts and any cabinet doors you decide to keep. Next either re-stain & polyurethane; OR enamel (spray paint a color of your choice) the frames, drawer fronts & remaining cabinet doors.
WHEN TO REMODEL: Always REMOVE & REPLACE particle board cabinets, vs. refurbish. Find a local carpenter to construct new cabinet frames with drawers from wood and plywood. Have your carpenter make wood doors for only the cabinets which will be storing grains, cereals, flour, etc (to keep safe from potential mice intrusion).
USE CABINET CURTAINS on base cabinets instead of cabinet doors (door panels are often cut from old growth trees in order to get wide enough width boards). Hang curtains with ring clips on either SWING ARM CURTAIN RODS, or on 3/8″ steel rods put up with low profile BARREL BRACKETS (wood dowel rods will eventually bow and sag).
CREATE OPEN SHELVING to display glassware and stoneware dishes at finger tip convenience. Eliminate wall cabinet doors where dishware is stored and refinish the frames and interior shelving; or completely replace those wall cabinet(s) with open shelving. Mount cabinet curtains across the top of select shelving to conceal pantry items, baking and cooking supplies, etc. Remember to keep one or two solid wood doors on cabinets to keep cereals, flour, sacks of grain, etc. safe from potential mice intrusion : )
MAKE COUNTER TOPS FROM PORCELAIN TILE instead of mined granite or linoleum which is made using melamine. Use a 3/4″ plywood base with a cement board layer bonded on next. Thin set and grout the largest possible tile 2′ x 2′ squares on top. Space tiles to the minimum to keep grout lines thinnest possible. You’ll need a tile pro to do the job because there is a trick to get the counter edge pieces even and bonded securely even which isn’t explained here.
Green Kitchens are where “old fashioned” conservation traditions become new trends.
